Does a payment mean my doctor is doing something wrong?

No. Federal law requires drug and device makers to report almost every transfer of value to a physician, down to a $14 sandwich at a lunch presentation. Roughly six in ten reported payments nationally are food and beverage. Consulting fees, research funding and royalties paid to physicians who invented a device are ordinary and legal. This site reports what was disclosed and makes no allegation about any individual.

Where does this data come from?

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Payments come from Open Payments, published under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Billing and prescribing come from the Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners and Part D Prescriber public use files. All are public-domain federal records.

Why is my doctor not listed?

We build a page for providers who have at least one Open Payments, Medicare Part B or Medicare Part D record. A doctor who has never received a reportable payment and does not bill Medicare will not appear.

Open Payments covers program years 2019 to 2025, published by CMS in June. Medicare billing and prescribing cover 2024. Provider names and registrations refresh monthly from the NPPES registry (July 2026).

A reported payment is not evidence of wrongdoing. 91% of all 87,655,770 reported payments in this data are food and beverage — typically a meal during a product presentation — and they account for just 9.2% of the money. Royalties go to physicians who invented a device; research money usually passes through the doctor to a hospital. The useful question is never “did they take money” but “what kind, how much, and how does that compare with their peers” — which is what every page here is built to show.
